Red Bull and a long black come from a different family of energy drinks. A long black is a type of coffee and a Red Bull is a canned energy drink brand. A long black contains more caffeine than a Red Bull, but it carries more benefits than that of a Red Bull.
Energy drinks and coffee both have a special place in our everyday routines. These caffeinated drinks serve a very important purpose in our lives. Don’t you think?
They give instant energy to get us through our day. Since we are multitasking all the time, we kind of need that extra energy kick. Because as times are moving and things keep getting hectic day by day, our bodies are relying on such beverages to help us get through the day victoriously.
But have you ever wondered, are these drinks really good for you? Maybe energy drinks are better than coffee, what do you say?
Let’s find out in this article what these two drinks are all about. One is coffee and the other one is solely a fizzy energy drink, so there must be many differences as well as drawbacks. Let’s start.
What Are The Ingredients In Long Black and Red Bull?
A long black and a Red Bull are both from different categories of energy booster drinks. A Red Bull is all artificial made from caffeine extract and artificial sweeteners. Whereas a long black is all-natural made from roasted coffee beans, and then it is steamed.
Long black, like with most popular coffee, is made with espresso as the base. Espresso, as we all know by now, is a very potent form of coffee that is usually used to develop other coffee drinks. If you’re new to a long black, you’ll get a much broader explanation in my other article.
But for making a long black, a sweeter version of the espresso is used, known as ristretto.
Ristretto is made when coffee grounds are brewed in water for a shorter period of time as compared to classic espresso. This results in a bit sweeter and less harsh coffee shot.
The ristretto is then poured over hot water in a coffee cup. Simple. You can add any form of sweetness to it, but originally, a long black is just an espresso shot and plain hot water.
Similarly, Red Bull also has caffeine like Long Black. But on the other hand, Red Bull contains ingredients that are mostly derived from artificial or synthesized sources.
The ingredients found in Red Bull are:
- Artificial Sweeteners
- B vitamins
- Caffeine anhydrous
Is Red Bull Stronger Than a Long Black?
A Red Bull and a long black are both equally strong. A long black has no dairy therefore the espresso is strong, and a Red Bull contains artificial boosters to make it more stimulant.
When we talk about these two drinks, they both are equally strong.
If we talk about a long black, the espresso being the base of the drink with no added sugar or any form of dairy makes it hit stronger than let’s say any latte or cappuccino.
Espresso is just mixed with plain water therefore it still holds its intensity very firmly.
Similarly, if we talk about Red Bull it is an artificial energy drink that also has very strong extracts added like caffeine. Also, the synthetic boosters make it stronger than any other drink. Red Bull is designed to give you wings, remember? Therefore, Red Bull is also a strong energy drink.
So, in conclusion, both of these drinks i.e. long black and Red Bull are strong drinks equally.
But lastly, I would like to add, that whatever your preference is among these two drinks, do not overdose on them.
Red Bull in moderate amounts may not harm you, but if you regularly consume the drink, you will find yourself feeling more and more tired once the drink wears off.
You can watch this video where they are comparing energy drinks to coffee.
How Much Sugar Do Both of Them Have?
A long black naturally doesn’t contain any sugar but a Red Bull has tons of artificial sweeteners added to it and has about 34 grams of sugar, making it extensively sweet and unhealthy.
A long black naturally doesn’t contain any amounts of sugar. But if you want additional sweetness you can add syrups or more sugar to it. But when it comes to Red Bull, on average a can of Red Bull contains about 34 gm of sugar. This is quite a lot.
Red bull contains approximately 14 teaspoons of sugar which is more than the recommended daily intake.
Therefore, a long black has no sugar and Red Bull has more than healthy amounts of sugar.
I’ve prepared a table of five popular energy drinks and their respective sugar content.
|Energy Drinks 12 oz||Sugar Content|
|Red Bull||34 gm|
Which is Healthier Between The Two: Red Bull Or Long Black?
Personally, I think a long black is healthier than a Red Bull. The major part of making a long black healthier is that it’s natural without any excessiveness of sugar and artificial ingredients.
A long black and Red Bull both provide moderate amounts of an energy boost to our bodies. But where long black is filled with antioxidants and essential nutrients like niacin and magnesium, Red Bull is an awesome supply of B vitamins.
I wrote an entire article dedicated to the benefits of a long black and you can check it out for a deeper dive.
If you consume each of these drinks in moderation on a regular basis, usually there isn’t an issue. But if you start consuming it in large amounts there is a problem. Typically, Red Bull isn’t as good for you if compared with a long black. Why?
Because of its, excessive sugar, lots of caffeine, preservatives, and boosting ingredients. Artificial sweeteners are present in Red Bull, which are difficult to absorb through your digestive tract.
Type 2 diabetes, kidney problems, and dental disorders have also been reported with caffeine overdose. Sugar-free Red Bull might seem like the answer. This isn’t true. Sugar-free Red Bull has less sugar but the rest of the ingredients and their respective effects stay the same. Therefore, a long black is healthier than Red Bull.
Does a Long Black Have More Caffeine Than a Red Bull?
A long black has more caffeine than Red Bull. In an 8 oz cup of a long black, there is about 205 mg of caffeine. And in a 12 oz can of Red Bull, there is about 102 mg of caffeine.
The caffeine in a long black is more than Red Bull.
The FDA recommends not to have more than 400 mg of caffeine each day. But our busy schedules and over-complicated lives have made us pretty much hooked on caffeine.
Kudos to those people who don’t need caffeine but most of us here do. The instant pick-me-up juice whether coffee or energy drink is a part of our daily ritual.
Whether it’s a strong cup of joe early morning to get started or a midday wake-up energy drink like Red Bull, you unknowingly can consume a lot of it. Caffeine overdosing leads to many consequences like nausea, jitteriness, migraines, and much more. So next time you are drinking Red Bull or long black, just be mindful of the quantities.
How Are They Different in Taste: Long Black VS Red Bull?
A long black tastes bitter and very intense with a hint of sweetness. Whereas a Red Bull is sweet and sour in flavor. Red Bull also has flavors like watermelon, tropical fruits, coconut, and berry.
A long black is the classic black coffee that serves the purpose of providing intense boosted energy quickly. It’s strong and intense without any additional flavoring.
But if you want to take it up a notch and make this coffee keto-friendly, people also add no flavored ghee or butter to make it Bulletproof coffee. Some people rave about Bulletproof coffee giving them that extra energy than a normal long black.
On the other hand, Red Bull has a totally different vibe from long black. A Red Bull is a sweet drink (that we figured earlier in the article) and is on the sour side.
Due to its caffeine content, it also sometimes tastes a bit metallic. But the general consensus on Red Bull is that it tastes like a watered-down cough syrup mixed with sugar. Though the original taste can be amplified because Red Bull comes in many flavors like watermelon, coconut, berry, and tropical fruits. So, if you haven’t already, you can try your favorite flavor.
What Are My Final Thoughts?
Each drink has its own pros and cons that we covered in detail. By doing so, we were able to get a much better understanding of each beverage.
I personally think that a long black is better than a Red Bull in comparison. You have the option to choose what’s best for you according to your preferences and health.
Considering your tolerance and health condition, I have explained in the above sections which drink will be the best booster for your body.
It’s okay to drink energy drinks occasionally, in moderation. In addition, if you are a sole coffee drinker, you are doing well, but remember not to overdo it.
