Baratza Encore Coffee Grinder (Detailed Review)

Baratza Encore Coffee Grinder (Detailed Review)

Aside from having flavorful beans, the final step in making good coffee is to find the best coffee grinder. Bad grinders can ruin both your coffee and your mood. But what if you’re just getting started with coffee? No need to worry, my recommendation has you covered.

The Encore is an entry-level burr grinder, but it still delivers strong performance and durability. If you ask any barista about a beginner-friendly grinder, they will always recommend the Baratza Encore Coffee Grinder.

The grind quality is far superior to that of a blade grinder or even a cheaper disk-burr grinder (these are common among sub-$50 models, but they are nowhere near as consistent as the conical steel burrs in the Encore).

To be honest, most people will be satisfied with that. In my opinion, it also has better flavor clarity than other popular entry-level models like the Bodum Bistro and the Wilfa Svart.

Founded in 1999, the American company ‘BARATZA’ has become well-known for its high-quality, modernized, and innovative coffee grinders, which provide consistency and fine quality every time.

Now since you’re so intrigued by this grinder, let’s take a look at its features:

The Encore’s 40 mm conical burrs are made in Europe and will grind for a variety of coffee styles. Conical burr grinders are excellent at producing consistent grinds ranging from very fine to very coarse, as well as being long-lasting and sharp for many years.

Gear Box

The Encore employs a simple and efficient direct drive gear reduction transmission to transfer power from the DC motor to the rotating cone burr. A thermal overload cutout protects the motor from overheating as a result of excessive use – remember, these grinders are intended to grind one dose at a time for home use!

Grind Adjustment

Turn the hopper to quickly adjust from fine for espresso to coarse for French Press with 40 settings. The grind range is between 250 and 1200 microns.

Grounds Left In Grinder

The Encore reduces the amount of ground coffee left in the grinder to maximize freshness.

The burrs are effortlessly driven by a powerful, high torque DC motor. This motor rotates slowly, resulting in cool, quiet operation and allowing for extended grinding duty cycles. The circuitry includes a thermal cutoff switch that automatically resets.

An ingenious burr calibration system ensures that each grinder has a complete range of grinds. The grinders can be calibrated by the user if necessary.

Speed Control

The Encore uses a combination of gear and electronic speed reduction to control the rotation of the burr up to 550 RPM. This slow speed in the grinder reduces heat, noise, and static generation. It also ensures that the beans feed into the burrs smoothly.

Burrs are easily removed without the use of tools, making cleaning a breeze.

Hopper Extender

An extension that can increase the capacity of the existing 8 oz. bean hopper by 9 oz.

With a great invention, there is always room for improvement. The encore, like other grinders on the market, comes with some minor troubleshooting. But, hey! Don’t worry, we’ll provide you with all possible troubleshooting solutions under this specific heading.

Grinders can cause clogging; how can you unclog without worry?

Solution: Remove the hopper by rotating it counterclockwise and lifting the ring burr until the grinding chamber is exposed. With the provided narrow tool, clean the compact coffee grounds around the chamber.

If a white floor is visible, the chamber is clear. With the grinder facing away from you, the chamber wall has a discharge chute between 10 and 12 o’clock positions; now, bend the cleaning tool and push compacted coffee out of the discharge chute.

When the tunnel is clear, replace the burrs counterclockwise, but remember to replace the silicone gasket. Check that the red tab on the burr holder is aligned with the 30th grinder setting.

Install the hopper, and you’re ready for another cup of coffee.

Poor Grinding Quality

Have you recently been bothered by the phrases ‘I can’t get consistent grinding’ or ‘the grinder is too static’?

Solution: You must inspect three of the factors listed here. First, twist the hopper counterclockwise past the 40-degree setting, then lift and remove the silicone gasket and burr.

Inspect the three burr flanges; if one is missing or cracked, the burr must be replaced. Second, investigate the burr chamber. You should see four paddle wheel fins; if one of them is worn or broken, it is time to replace it.

Third, when reassembling, the red tab must align on the 30th grinding adjustment, which is near the machine’s front right.

Paddlewheel Replacement

Do you know what one of the many causes of a clogged grinder is? Yes, you guessed correctly! The broken paddle could be the source of the problem.

Solution: The simplest steps to replace it are provided. Turn the hopper counterclockwise to 40 degrees, then lift and remove the silicone gasket and burr holders.

Check to see if any of the flanges are broken. Next, locate two retaining clips that secure the burr to the metal rings; break one of the clips and they both will come off. Don’t worry, you’re almost there.

Take a new retainer and slide one side of the metal ring into it, then squeeze them tightly together. Congrats! You succeeded in installing a new paddlewheel just in time.

Grinder Settings

As a new user, you don’t understand the adjustments? Don’t be concerned; I won’t abandon you there.

Solution: Grinder adjustment could be tricky if you are a newbie, here are some of the beginner-friendly setting lists for encore grinder:

  • Espresso: 8
  • Automatic brewer: 18
  • Aero press: 12
  • Chemex: 20
  • French press: 28
  • Hario v60: 15

By following the above chart you can enjoy your coffee brewing just up to your liking

So, why would anyone recommend this brewer when there are cheaper alternatives on the market? The answer is simple: the Baratza company has thoughtfully assembled its products so that newcomers can begin their coffee journey without difficulty.

The only automatic grinder with 40 settings under $200 is the Baratza Encore.

Furthermore, the grinder itself is simple to use, with precisely cut burrs, controllable options for your coffee preferences, and a smooth and consistent grind every time! And the list could go on and on.

To be honest, if I had to summarise this grinder in a nutshell, I would say that the grinder serves the purpose by being one of a kind with its durability, dependability, and well-balanced all-arounder performance around the world.

That being said, there are always cheaper options on the market to fall back on.
